Loss of focus at university

James’s ADHD story

James was really looking forward to going to university and escaping the rules and regulation of school and life at home. He was keen to get away from his parents nagging him to do homework or checking that he was revising and not gaming.

University would mean freedom and no one checking up on him. Arriving at university he immediately enjoyed no one checking what time he went to bed or got up, or indeed if he went into lectures at all. He could stay on the internet, social media or gaming as long as he wanted. He could sleep until noon or later.

However, James started missing coursework deadlines, feeling too tired to concentrate, and he was soon behind in his studies. He wanted to succeed and admitted he did enjoy the subject he was studying but, without the structure of school and supervision of home life, he seemed unable to organise a routine, attend lectures and seminars and get on with academic life. He could not get away from other temptations.

He repeatedly missed deadlines, failed exams and now, his university has suggested he take a break and come back after he has developed ‘a more mature attitude to his studies’.
